A fast path to Linux tooling
WSL2 provides a real Linux kernel, close Windows integration, and a lightweight way to run many familiar security tools. For scripting, development, reconnaissance utilities, and daily command-line work, it can dramatically reduce friction.
Kali on WSL2 is especially useful when a full isolated virtual machine would be unnecessary overhead.
Isolation still matters
WSL2 is not a universal replacement for a hypervisor. Malware analysis, hostile network testing, snapshots, isolated virtual networks, multiple operating systems, and experiments that demand strong boundaries still belong in dedicated virtual machines.
Treat WSL2 as another lab component: excellent for speed and integration, but not a substitute for every security boundary.
